The seven tools in detail
ShipCay
Australia / Canada / cross-borderCross-border sellers shipping mainly to AU/CA at volume, where freight cost is the main lever
Strengths
- · Carrier depth on AU/CA lanes: official labels direct from Australia Post, Canada Post, Purolator and Aramex
- · Per-order rate comparison across carriers, defaulting to the cheapest rather than a fixed carrier
- · Batch payment plus a merged label PDF—hundreds or thousands of orders in one pass
- · Per-label pricing (from US$2, lower with volume) with no plan bundling
- · Optional AU/CA warehouses for 2–3 day local delivery
Where we fall short
- · A smaller ecosystem and fewer integrations than long-established platforms like ShipStation
- · Less European carrier depth than Sendcloud
- · For purely US-domestic small parcels, a tool like Pirate Ship may be simpler
- · A newer brand with few public reviews so far
High-volume US sellers who need deep automation rules
Strengths
- · A mature automation rule engine with fine-grained conditions
- · One of the widest sets of marketplace and store integrations
- · Full inventory and multi-warehouse management
- · Large community and documentation—easy to find answers
Limitations
- · Carrier depth skews US-domestic; AU/CA lanes are comparatively thin
- · Feature depth brings a learning curve small teams may not need
- · Plan-based subscription is less flexible when volume fluctuates
Teams with developers who want to build on an API
Strengths
- · Clean API design with high-quality docs—fast to integrate
- · Pay-per-label option without forcing a subscription
- · Solid multi-carrier rate shopping
Limitations
- · The out-of-the-box operations UI is lighter than peers
- · Cross-border and warehousing scenarios need assembling yourself
- · Steeper for non-technical teams
Sellers with heavy international volume who need duty and tax estimates
Strengths
- · Duty and tax estimation is a genuine strength for cross-border
- · Broad global courier coverage
- · Front-end tools such as checkout rate display
Limitations
- · Fee structure is relatively complex—total cost needs careful modelling
- · Limited depth on AU/CA local fulfilment
- · Bulk label throughput is average
Budget-conscious sellers shipping only within the US
Strengths
- · The software itself is free with no monthly fee and transparent pricing
- · Minimal interface with almost no learning curve
- · Good cost control on US domestic small parcels
Limitations
- · Narrow carrier range, centred on USPS and UPS
- · Not suited to cross-border or multi-country lanes
- · Limited automation and bulk capability
Veeqo
US / UKAmazon sellers wanting free software plus inventory management
Strengths
- · Free software, operated by Amazon
- · Inventory and multichannel management built in, not an add-on
- · Competitive carrier discounts on US/UK lanes
Limitations
- · Tightly coupled to the Amazon ecosystem
- · AU/CA cross-border lanes are not its focus
- · Roadmap is set by the platform owner, leaving less control
ShippingEasy
US-centricUS SMBs wanting shipping bundled with email marketing
Strengths
- · Shipping and customer marketing tools in one place
- · Friendly onboarding aimed at smaller sellers
- · Established USPS discount rates
Limitations
- · Largely US-domestic with weak cross-border capability
- · Average bulk and API capability
- · Focus is split toward marketing features
Sendcloud
EuropeSellers shipping mainly within Europe who need local returns flows
Strengths
- · Deep European carrier network
- · Complete returns portal and local buyer experience
- · Mature handling of country-level EU compliance
Limitations
- · AU/CA/US lanes are not its home turf
- · Limited carrier choice outside Europe
How we compared them
Six dimensions decide whether a shipping tool fits: your primary lane, carrier depth on that lane, whether every order is rate-shopped or fixed to one carrier, the billing model (plan bundle vs per label), bulk throughput, and whether local fulfilment is available. We deliberately left out feature checklists and headline pricing—checklists flatter whoever has the longest list, and published prices date within months.
One honest caveat: we build ShipCay, so this list is not neutral in the way an independent review site would be. What we can do is be specific about where we are the wrong choice—and we have listed those cases above rather than burying them.
Common questions
Is there a free ShipStation alternative?
Pirate Ship and Veeqo are free as software, but the former covers US domestic only and the latter is tightly coupled to the Amazon ecosystem. "Free" usually refers to the software fee—freight is still billed at carrier rates. At volume, whether every order is rate-shopped matters far more than saving a monthly fee.
Is switching shipping software disruptive to orders in flight?
You rarely need to switch everything at once. A practical approach is to move one lane first (for example, only AU/CA orders), confirm it runs smoothly, then expand. Orders import by CSV or API, historical orders can stay where they are, and parcels already in transit are unaffected.
How do I know whether to switch at all?
Check three things: (1) whether your main lane is your current tool’s strength; (2) whether every order is actually rate-compared; (3) whether labelling is still manual order by order. If two of the three are unsatisfactory, switching usually returns meaningful cost or time.
Is ShipCay right for everyone?
No. Sellers shipping only within the US are usually better served by a tool like Pirate Ship; those shipping mainly within Europe by Sendcloud; and large teams needing very complex automation rules by ShipStation. ShipCay’s strength is AU/CA cross-border lanes, bulk labelling and per-order rate comparison.
How was this comparison made?
Tools are compared across six dimensions: primary lane, carrier depth, rate-shopping model, billing model, bulk capability and fulfilment options. Competitor information is based on public material and product positioning, and deliberately avoids specific pricing that dates quickly. Always confirm on each vendor’s own site.
